Aging Out

Ottawa, Ontario
2023
The Lab was entrusted with research and design for a Holistic hub initiated by The Child and Youth Permanency of Canada, formerly known as  Adoption Canada. The Adoption Council of Canada has identified the creation of a holistic hub providing a wide range of services and supports as the optimum approach. The initial hub would be based in Ottawa as a pilot project for possible replication across the country. Construct a new center with 20 private rooms to house those facing homelessness. the project highlights the voices of 107 young women+, 75% of whom identify as BIPOC. As part of the BIPOC community, these young women are overrepresented in the child welfare system and when aging out without a form of permanency. All of them experience economic insecurity when aging out of care.

The project took place in tandem with the Design Option studio during the winter of 2023 and built conversations around trauma-informed design with experts from ShopWorks Architecture in Denver.
