1700SPOT is a public space designed with the Russell Heights community, offering a multifunctional area that supports the mental health and well-being of its youth, with a particular focus on the needs of the predominantly black youth. This project represents the collaborative efforts of the Russell Heights Community House, Ottawa Community Housing, Architecture Action Lab, and Carleton Architecture students. 1700SPOT aims to create a vibrant public space that includes a gathering area, an outdoor movie viewing area, and an outdoor gym.

The design posits architecture as social infrastructure capable of nurturing community well-being. In acknowledging the disproportionate challenges faced by black youth in urban settings, the project emphasizes creating a space that is not only safe but also empowering. The design integrates elements that encourage social interaction, physical activity, and quiet reflection, all of which are essential for holistic mental health.

Phase one of the project included three main outcomes:

1. Repair and refurbishment of the kitchens and the youth house                                   
   
2. Cleaning and repainting the basketball court                                                                   
   
3. Creating a community pergola connecting the two spaces with each other
   

Phase two of the project will consist of three main spaces:

1. Gathering Space: A central feature of 1700SPOT, this area will serve community events and social gatherings.                                                                       
   
2. Outdoor Movies Viewing Area: This will serve as a flexible interface for the gathering space.                                                                                                                               
   
3. Outdoor Gym: this was a direct request from the youth and a feature in all their design    ideas.
